Helping Special Education Students Stay Engaged and Alert!

My Project

My special education students are enthusiastic and full of energy—and with the restrictions in a standard classroom setting due to COVID-19 policies, this can make staying focused difficult. It can be a struggle for them to sit in one place for up to an hour. This is on top of constant audible distractions from outside, the hallway, and other classmates. And while I plan my lessons so my students have the opportunity to move around and stay engaged, there are tools to accommodate them even at their seats!

Bouncy Bands allow students to sit at their chair in compliance with COVID-19 recommendations and move the band, relieving anxiety, hyperactivity and boredom.

It’s perfect for my students, especially for those with ADHD, autism, sensory needs, and behavioral issues. With these Bouncy Bands added to my classroom chairs, my students will be able to focus better in a quiet way that doesn't distract others. As education continues to adapt to COVID-19 and the social-emotional needs of students impacted by anxiety, loss, and mental health issues, it is essential to use evidence-based methods to support our students. A case study showed that the average child is able to focus 10% more with Bouncy Bands, which equates to 35 minutes each school day of improved focus, better behavior, and higher scores.

Additionally, providing headphones for class use will allow students to better focus on their classwork. This is especially important for students who have hearing impairments and require extra audio support and students who work best independently. Not only will my students be better engaged in their seats with Bouncy Bands, but they will be at lesser risk for sensory overload and distraction with the headphones.

My students deserve the best and most accommodating classroom environment to thrive, and these additions will do wonders for everyone!
