My Students

Being able to read WELL is one of the most important skills a person can have! Think about it. How many times do you use the skill of reading in just one day? If you were to keep a tally, I imagine that the final number would be quite high!

I teach at a small, diverse school in Washington state.

My school is classified as a high-poverty school, with many students taking part in the free or reduced-price lunch program. My classroom of students is always made up of a wide variety of abilities, interests, and challenges. From learning support students, to English language learners, to gifted students, I am here to teach them all and give them the best education!

My Project

Because we use reading so often in our daily lives, I take the job of teaching my students how to read very seriously. Every day in class I work to make sure that my students are reading and understanding books that are perfect for them at their current reading levels. Only by reading books that are the right fit for each of my individual students, will they continue to grow and improve. As a teacher, I know how to do this, but I constantly have parents telling me that they want to help their children too! The parents of my students are often unsure about which books are best for their child. That is why I am writing this project. I am requesting many different nonfiction books about animals to use as Take-Home Books. I will be able to send home books such as "Bats," "Foxes," and "Opossums" with my students at levels that are PERFECT for them.

By taking the pressure of choosing the right books off of parents, they will be free to do the most important task of all -- listening to their child read!

Parents will be able to help their children with these books, and talk with them about what they are reading. I believe that if students can read the right books at school AND at home, they will be able to grow as readers by leaps and bounds! Thank you for reading my project, and thank you for supporting my amazing students!
