Helping Our School's Ecosystem

My students need to have ladybugs, butterfly larvae, and red worms to help them understand how these creatures help our ecosystem.

This project is fully funded

I teach 4th and 5th grade science to about 340 students, 36 of whom are have special needs. In my science lab I have 7 different types of pets (a guinea pig a sand turtle, a bearded dragon 2 water frogs, 2 red bellied frogs, anoles and snails) which my students get to observe and care for each day. The students are very good with these pets and that is why I know they would love to be able to observe and learn how ladybugs, butterflies and worms can help an ecosystem. My school has a beautiful yard that is landscaped with trees and bushes. I would love to add to the beauty of our ecosystem with these live creatures. Many of the students know about composting but they never experienced it. Working with live worms and using it for composting is a wonderful experience. Also, observing the life cycle of a butterfly first hand is amazing. They would be able to see how larvae becomes a pupa then a butterfly. The ladybugs are especially intriguing. It is particularly interesting to learn why they eat aphids and how this can improve and ecosystem. Having live animals in a classroom is the best thing in the world and the children learn so much from this type of experience. Please help my students experience how these creatures are beneficial to a healthy ecosystem.
