My Project
I teach first grade at a Title 1 school where most of my students face significant challenges and have limited access to basic resources. Despite these obstacles, our class has made incredible progress, rising from an F to a C rating over the past three years. This growth shows just how capable our scholars are when given the right support. Unfortunately, our district is facing a $42 million deficit, resulting in drastic cuts to classroom supplies. Yet, my students still deserve engaging, meaningful learning experiences that help them thrive.
This project is designed to keep that momentum going by bringing our reading and math lessons to life.
The current ELA curriculum includes weekly themes like "At School," "Where I Live," and "Our Pets," but the materials often don't reflect our students’ lives. I'm requesting items like glitter, stickers, face cutouts, cotton balls, sentence strips, craft kits, and more to allow students to create projects connected to our reading themes. These hands-on activities not only boost engagement but also help build self-esteem especially when their work is proudly displayed on a bulletin board using hanging hooks and push pins.
In math, we follow the philosophy of Bob Moses, who believed in connecting learning to real life especially for Black and Brown children. To make math concrete and fun, I'm asking for items like marshmallows, rubber bands, straws, balance scales, beans, cereal, and candy rings. These everyday items will help students build a strong foundation in math through real-world application.
