Helping Military Kids Connect through Reading!

My students need books for our classroom library that help us all learn and connect with each other through a fabulous collection of literature!

My Students

Home is where the Army sends you, but imagine changing homes and schools every two or three years. Imagine moving away from the only friends you have ever known. I want to show my first graders that books are the friends that go everywhere with us, no matter where the Army sends you!

My classroom is in the Midwest and located on a military installation.

Many of my first grade students are new to our district and state. They have moved with their families because of a change in orders for their military parent. This is not an easy adjustment for those kids that end up moving every few years coupled with the fact that they often spend up to a year at a time without one parent around. My students have daily struggles that many other students do not face in other schools. My students need a variety of books to draw in interest and help build a community between the students.

My Project

Literature has a way of bringing two unsuspecting students together! The life lessons and connections they make with each other will go with them wherever the army sends them next! I have chosen many books that emphasize math, science, and some stories that are just for fun. These various books will help students learn valuable information as well as develop a passion for books and for reading. Many of these kids are from poverty-stricken families and books at home are just not an option. I would love to expose those children to a wide variety of stories but as a first year teacher, I am not able to purchase every book I would like too!

My students deserve the very best education possible.

I hope to encourage a love of reading in all of my students but the only way I can do that is by having an appropriate classroom library. I have chosen books that will help my students connect to math and science through literature and books that will help them connect to each other! My first graders are already digging into the books I have in my library and we would all appreciate a bigger selection of stories!
