Helping Little Minds Reach their Goals with Technology

My students need Chromebooks in order to have the opportunity to learn at their own individual levels and progress at a pace that is comfortable, but challenging for them.

My Students

In one word I can describe my students - diverse. Diverse in every way possible. Each and every one of my 26 students is special in his or her own way. Each of those 26 students behaves, feels, and learns differently. Not all of my students are fortunate enough to have a two-parent home or even an adult to read to them on a nightly basis. Some of my students are going through struggles and loss that could burden an adult four times their age. It is my job as their teacher, not only to teach them curricula, but to provide them with the tools necessary to reach their potential.

Teaching 26 individuals can be challenging without the means necessary to help them advance in their life-long journey of learning.

I teach at a school that has recently hired a new teacher into the 2nd grade level and the technology necessary for another classroom was not purchased. As a non-Title 1 school, we don't receive additional funding to support students in the area of technology as a Title 1 school would. The technology we need will help enrich student learning for the diverse needs of these students.

My Project

As a teacher of 26 students, it is my mission to reach the diverse needs of each and every one of them, but the truth is that I cannot do it effectively without technology. Computers are excellent resources because they provide the opportunity for students to work at their own pace, on their own level, and computers also help us keep track of data on student progress.

In our classroom, we engage in 5 rotations-20 minutes of ELA/reading/writing groups 4 days per week in small group differentiation.

Math groups are also incorporated into our classroom. In these groups, students receive detailed differentiated instruction to meet their changing needs. The Chromebooks will help meet them at their level. We utilize various websites to instruct/intervene/challenge students such as Readtheory, MobyMax, Frontrow, Quizlet, Spelling City..etc. These are just a few of the commonly used websites. In addition, I teach my students coding. It makes it incredibly difficult to do so without readily available access to computers in my classroom. I would love to incorporate more STEAM resources into my classroom. Also, these computers will help meet the diverse needs of Tier 3 Response to Intervention students to help them receive additional support measures.
