This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the wonderful privilege of teaching P.E. at a diverse charter school in Las Vegas. Teaching at my school has provided me with opportunities to do more than just teach P.E. during the school day. Each day, I tutor a group of Kindergarten students after school. Some of my students know their ABCs while some of them are still learning. Some of my students struggle with English because it is not their first language while others seem to speak with near-perfect diction. All of my students do have one thing in common: they want to learn so they can be better.

I teach at a Title I School in Nevada in which a high percentage of my students come from bilingual homes and receive free or reduced price lunch.

My students face tough obstacles in their lives but arrive to school smiling and ready to learn. They love their teachers and they adore their principal. Our school truly is a community – a family. We each do our part, as student and teacher work side by side with one mission in mind: our students’ success. Our Kindergarten students even know the year of their college graduation!

My Project

My school offers a free after-school tutoring program to all of our students. I have the privilege to tutor a group of Kindergartners. Many of my students are English language learners; students whose first language is not English. A significant part of our tutoring program involves online literacy programs designed to improve and enhance the user's English capabilities. My students love these programs and it really does make learning English fun for them. However, part of the required tasks for many of these programs involves the students speaking into a microphone and recording their answers so their teachers can assess their speaking progress.

My students need headphones with a microphone so they can complete all the required tasks of their online literacy programs and gain crucial English skills.

The headphones will allow my students to complete the speaking portion of their online programs and achieve the highest levels of progress in their English mastery. These headphones will facilitate my students in their quest to learn how to read, write, and speak the English language. Most importantly, this addition will help prevent them from falling behind in their reading and writing skills and prepare them to be bilingual 1st graders with a bright future.
