Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
What I love most about my students is their resilience, warmth, and ability to find joy, even in tough circumstances. I serve a Title I school with a high population of Hispanic, immigrant, and newcomer families. Many of my students have experienced significant trauma—whether through displacement, poverty, or instability—and these challenges often impact their ability to fully engage in learning. Despite this, they show up each day ready to try, and they truly appreciate the small things: a kind word, a snack, a safe place to breathe.
As the school counselor, I often provide the only mental health or social-emotional support they receive.
That’s why it’s so important to create a space where they feel safe, heard, and cared for. What I can offer them during the school day—a book that reflects their experiences, a tool to calm anxiety, or even just a snack—can make a meaningful difference in how they feel and how they learn.
