This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have observed that my students enjoy learning through sensory and fine motor play.
My students are thoughtful and open to discovering new materials and enjoy building with their hands and using their creativity during free play.
In the last few weeks, I have observed that my students need more challenging materials to advance their learning experience. They enjoy building large sculptures with LEGO bricks and spend much time playing with the few puzzles in my classroom. Currently, we have limited materials in our classroom, and it has become increasingly difficult for me to plan activities to engage fine motor and cognitive learning.
My Project
As a preschool teacher, I support and encourage discovery and learning through play. My students need manipulatives such as magnetic building blocks, creative kids flakes, playstix, and classic LEGO set. I strongly believe in selecting educational materials that are open-ended in order to help children create, build, and construct ideas. I hope that these manipulative items will encourage collaboration and social interaction as a way to work together and take turns. I want my students to think "outside of the box" and use manipulatives as a way to construct their ideas in the physical form. I also want to encourage understanding of how things go together by providing puzzles that encourage persistence and allow them time to finish what they have started. The LEGO sets will help them create buildings, castles, and cars. They will work together to share the materials such as the playstix's and use the different colors to define their length and space of the structures.
I strongly believe this project will help improve my classroom because it will introduce my students more open-ended learning materials.
The benefits of these manipulative toys will also help with grasping, twisting pieces together, and pulling pieces apart. For this reason, they aide in the development of hand-eye coordination and hand strength. Manipulatives also encourage self-talk, discussion, and language development. Children will talk to themselves/others about what they are going to do and how they are going to do it. During this time children are allowed to work independently which promotes self-regulation skills and can help gradually lengthen a their attention span.
