I teach 4th grade in a public school with a 38% poverty level. I want to teach all of my students the joy of writing! Sometimes as children get older, their desire to write fades.
I will start by modeling good writing for my students. My students will observe me talking about and modeling the six traits of writing (ideas, organization, voice, sentence fluency, word choice and conventions). They will see me as a writer and someone who enjoys writing. I will use mini-lessons that teach students good writing techniques such as using detail, selecting good topics, writing good endings and utilizing strong verb choices. I also will have students draw a picture then write about it. Students will also learn different ways to organize their ideas with graphic organizers.
My students will have several writing projects this year. They will be writing Tall Tales, Black History Reports, and Memoirs. They will also be learning and writing different kinds of poetry. The materials I will need to complete this project are: Four Square Writing Method, Poetry Writing, Draw Then Write, 6+1 Traits of Writing, 25 Mini-Lessons for Teaching Writing, 50 Writing Lessons That Work!, If You Are Trying to Teach How to Write...,You've Gotta Have This Book!, and Books, Lessons, Ideas for Teaching the Six Traits.
I want my students to find joy in writing and become lifelong writers. Funding this grant will give my students the opportunity to become confident, and competent children who love to write!
