I teach first grade at a suburban school in Los Angeles. I have mixed ability children in my classroom ranging from gifted to students with identified learning disabilities.
One of my goals as a teacher is to help my students begin to learn how to be responsible for the care of their own supplies. Not only do I want them to learn to decide what supplies they will need for an assignment, but I also want them to know how to keep their supplies neat and when and how to sharpen their own pencils.
The non-electric sharpeners are too difficult for a first grader to use properly, so I spend valuable teaching time sharpening pencils throughout each day. With so many budget cuts the district only allows a certain amount of money each year to each school and that money has to go to books and other necessities, so there is no money to buy or replace supplies such as electric pencil sharpeners.
I believe that electric pencil sharpeners are also a necessity in a classroom to teach responsibility and how to take care of your supplies. You can help my students to learn these lifelong skills at any early age.
