Help With Wiggly Reading Students!

My students need items to help them concentrate. The fidget toys, resistance bands, and the inflatable balance pads will be great to help them with their wiggles!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My reading students are amazing! Even when they are tired, they work really hard during our time together.

My reading intervention students run to greet me at our scheduled times.

They are excited and ready to learn skills that will help them become better readers. The elementary children I teach are anywhere from a few months below grade level to more than a year below grade level in reading.

There are many reasons for their lack of reading skills. Some of them have parents who feel they can't help them read English, because they themselves aren't literate in English. Other students have parents who work and may not have time to help with reading when they get home from a long day. All parents want what is best for their children, of course, but they may not know how to help.

The school where I teach is located in an area where there is a lot of low-income housing. Almost 80% of the students receive free or reduced lunch and 100% of the students receive free breakfast.

My Project

My first grade through fifth grade students always try their best in our reading intervention groups. Some of my students are more than a year behind in their reading skills, but do not qualify for special needs. I started noticing that a lot of the kids have difficulty staying on task or paying attention, even for very short periods of time, and believe this short attention span negatively influences their learning.

All children have the wiggles, as they are children and have LOTS of energy.

I have never been a teacher to tell my students to "sit still." I think children need to move and need help learning to pay attention. That is why I have chosen the great items on my project.

For the last several years I have used bungee cords wrapped around the bottoms of student chair legs so they could kick their feet on the bungee without disturbing their neighbors. I once had a boy sit in the chair and kick for a few minutes and then said, "Boy, I needed this today!" The bungee cords work well, but don't last very long before they start to fray. I have talked to the special education teachers at school and they have had great results using the inflatable chair cushions for children who need to wiggle. The weighted lap blanket is very useful to calm children who may get excited or anxious easily. The fidget toys are very helpful to keep hands busy while reading.

By teaching my students to control their energy, it is my hope that my kids will become better, more focused learners, not only in reading, but throughout their school day. I think being more successful in academics will also increase their confidence and self- esteem.
