Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever felt squished on a train or during a long car ride hoping someone would make room for you? Unfortunately, that is exactly how my children feel whenever we have whole group time. Though we try so hard to spread our kids out on the rug, we have outgrown our rug.

Our elementary school is located in the heart of our busy city in a low income area.

My class is made up of 15 amazing four year olds both with and without disabilities who have Spanish as a first language. Our classroom is located in the dark basement of our school, but we try to make our classrooms as bright and as lively as possible.

My Project

Though we try so hard to spread our children out, our rug has outgrown us. Because we don't have defined spaces on our rug, my students have a hard time containing their bodies and not kicking or elbowing their friends. Our lessons during Morning Meeting, story time and math time, are constantly interrupted by my students complaining about being squished and not being able to see. I try my best to make all my children comfortable, but my efforts just don't seem to be enough. I've tried to use duct tape to make spaces for each child, but the children try to rip it off. We are asking for a new rug that has defined spaces for children so all students will be comfortable. The rug we have chosen has spaces in the form of different colored shapes which will enable us to both assign seats and also support their learning. During multiple times during the year, we have a lesson called shape walk in which we ask students to step on a shape that we name. We usually tape shapes using masking tape on the rug, but with this new rug, we won't have to!

Next year the number of students in our program will be increasing and we won't have room to accommodate the increase.

Please, please, please help us in making room for all students to have access to our curriculum for this year and for the future! It will not only help us be more comfortable but also help our classroom brighter and support our learning. Thank you for your consideration!
