Hello! I am the Academic Intervention Services teacher for grades K-2 at PS 9 in Brooklyn, NY. To the kids, I'm simply the reading helper. Struggling students come to my classroom for small group phonics and guided reading lessons. In order for the lessons to be effective, students need the opportunity to incorporate new skills while reading independently.
As stated in Part 1 of this proposal, there is a limited amount of in-school time devoted to independent reading. Unfortunately, the majority of my students do not have appropriately leveled books at home through which they can practice new skills and increase their fluency.
Part 1 of this proposal requests organizational bins, starter books and labels for reading levels Kindergarten through 2nd Grade (Levels A-K). In Part 2, I am asking for additional books as well as protective envelopes in which the children will take home the books.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
