Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"May I sharpen my pencil?" This is a question often asked by students throughout the day to their teachers. In the music room I have to say "No." There is not a working pencil sharpener in the room. The mechanical one on the wall will eat an entire pencil before it will ever give you a point.
I teach music to students in Pre-K to 8th grade.
My elementary school is in Illinois and 90% of the students qualify for reduced or free lunch. These students are hungry for musical knowledge and hands on activities including singing, dancing, and playing instruments.
My Project
There is not a working pencil sharpener in the room. The mechanical one on the wall will eat an entire pencil before it will ever give you a point to to write with, although my students do still try sometimes. I try to keep a stock of sharpened pencils that students can trade me for.
We use pencils to write in our music! Circle a half-note that we keep missing, or write in the flats or sharps from the key signature because we have trouble remembering them for the entire line.
This pencil sharpener will save me time.
I won't have to remember to go to the office with a cup of pencils every other day to sharpen. The students will be able to sharpen their own pencils and class instruction will not be disrupted to make a trade.
Thank-you for your generous support. Without this website my music program would be completely different, with very few instruments and resources!
