Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are passionate learners who are working hard to catch up. I teach a class of 25 4th and 5th graders who are an average of 2 years behind in reading. Despite the educational and personal challenges that my students face, I continue to be inspired by their perseverance and brilliance.
My student love to read fiction books because of the familiar vocabulary and engaging characters. On the other hand, they struggle with the difficult vocabulary and unfamiliar topics in non-fiction books. Their aversion to non-fiction is exacerbated by the lack of exciting non-fiction text in my classroom.
We have had many class discussion about this issue, and the students have created a plan for change! One of their favorite activities is timing their reading because it allows for them to track their progress from week to week. My students decided that they would like to use non-fiction for their timed reading in order to turn this type of text into something that they look forward to. I was very impressed with their problem solving!
In order to help my students follow through on their brilliant plan, I promised to do my best to acquire a larger selection of non-fiction texts as well as enough timers for students to use in groups of two. By providing our class with these resources you will be empowering students to read more challenging texts and win their own personal reading race!
