Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello Wonderful donors I am a 5th grade math teacher, but I also like to teach responsibility in the aspect of taking care of our environment by recycling. My students come from low economic families in a large inter city setting.

Recycling helps the students learn responsibility by taking care of the world around them in which they live. We learn math concepts such as measurement (tons and pounds of paper), percentages (percentages of what materials are recycled), real world problem solving (what can be accomplished by recycling). Of course there are many environment science concepts that can be learned. The list can go on. Just making them aware of the benefits of recycling is so very important. Last spring for Earth Day we had one whole day in which no paper could be used at our school. The copy rooms were locked and teachers had to think of other ways to teach their lesson other than the use of paper. Such as dry erase boards and even oral discussion with interaction amongst students.

The problem has been getting all the teachers on the band wagon and involved. If all the teachers had containers specifically for recycled paper that would be so great. A few teachers do have recycle containers but not all. On Fridays I have a group of students who go around and pick up the recycle bins and take them out and dump them in our paper recycle dumpster.

The students really do enjoy recycling and gain a feeling of accomplishment when we are on some months able to fill our paper recycle dumpster. Our school gets a small amount of money for every ton of paper recycled. This money is used for paying for field trips which we were only able to go on one last year, because of the high cost of buses for transportation. Thank you so much for all the help you can give us on our school wide paper recycle project.
