Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Due to five years of classroom use, including maintenance updates and power chord replacements, our classroom computer has bid us a sad farewell. As a make shift replacement, we have been using an LCD projector, but have come to a realization... when the bulb expires, so does our computer use. Well..it happened.
I teach 20 diverse students attending a year round math and science charter school in Washington D.C. They are comprised of many different ethnic backgrounds (Honduras, Ireland, El Salvador, Africa, etc.) and due to our high need population, are not able to access technological advances outside of the classroom, let alone see it's significant use.
Our classroom computer served as a wonderful educational resource. Students enjoyed conducting research and learning more about their culture. They appreciated being able to speak in front of the class sharing arts and literature while increasing their public speaking skills. With a classroom computer, students were able to use educational websites to strengthen their skills in math, as well as, grammar during choice time and afterschool. Since we are year round, our classroom computer gets used quite a bit.
We were in the beginning phase of establishing an e-based pen pal communication with other students in charter schools to increase with social and writing skills. After experiencing the advances of services such as skype and ichat, students are able to look and observe other classroom environments. As a teacher, I too have enjoyed being able to observe my fellow colleagues in academic action, as well as, share ideas to further develop skills and concepts for my students.
The advances of technology in the classroom are endless. With your help, we can continue to reap its benefits!
