Help Us To Green Our Concrete Jungle

My students need dirt, seeds, pots and plants in order to study how plants grow. We also need soil testing kits and worm a way kits to learn more about soil.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My class lives in a high-need, inner city neighborhood. The children are primarily second language, and low language exposure students who do their best work when there are strong experiential and visual elements.

My classroom looks out onto blacktop, bricks and sidewalks. Our playground is decorated with plywood flowers and trees. They are pretty but we want to see real plants. The curious students have very little experience with nature, or with science. They started a Roots & Shoots Club. This Organization, begun by Dr. Jane Goodall, encourages children to undertake projects for people, animals and the Earth. The students organized a project for people; they make lunches for the homeless. They collect pennies to give to organizations that work with animals.

Because my students have very little experience with nature we need to watch things grow. We need to understand the importance of dirt and the importance of being part of, and stewards of our ecosystem and environment. These supplies (dirt, seeds, pots, plants and books) will allow us to set up a controlled experiment to observe plants growing under different conditions. Our soil testing kit will help us to understand both the optimum conditions for plants to grow and also to assess the soil quality in and around our school. Our Worm A Way kit will allow us to work toward a goal of waste-free lunches. This will help us see the cycle that connects our food, plants dirt and ourselves.

Your donations will allow the fourth and third grade classes at my school to witness the wonder of plant growth and to better understand their relationship with the environment. Your donations will give them a hands on experience and begin to foster their stewardship of the environment. In the Spring when our plants grow larger you will be helping to decorate our blacktop with real plants. Please help our little learners begin to step out of their concrete jungle.
