My Students

I have been building a classroom library for my students, but what we really need are leveled books that my students can read independently. Having these books will help my students become successful and proficient readers as well as foster a lifelong love of reading!

My kindergarten students attend a K-8 school in an urban area.

Many of my students do not have books at home and lack the print rich environment they so desperately need at this early age. Our school does not have a librarian, or use of the library, so we rely heavily on our own classroom library. One of their favorite things to do is curl up with a book in our cozy library. These little guys are so excited about learning how to read and would benefit tremendously from having leveled books that they could read on their own.

My Project

I am requesting leveled books for my kindergarten students. With no library resources at our school, my students lack the opportunity to read books that are on their level. Our classroom library is composed of read aloud books that I have bought or that have been donated. My students "read" these books by looking at the illustrations or making up stories. Without leveled books, my students are unable to practice their reading skills. Research clearly shows that the reading of meaningful, connected text results in improved reading achievement. I want to give my students the opportunity to practice reading books at their reading level to build fluency, comprehension and vocabulary skills.
