Help Us Teach Others What We've Learned!

My students need an LCD projector in order to educate other students of alternative resources!

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Sviben's classroom raised $759

This project is fully funded

We are a small neighborhood Charter School. We only have two classes per grade-level for a total of 196 students. We pride ourselves on focusing on the individual student and offering exciting learning opportunities! We try to give students as much exposure to the sciences as possible. Science is our future! As a school, we are trying to make students aware of their impact on the environment and how they can help by showing them alternatives to what they know.

Our school has been trying to teach students the value of going green. The students have gotten so excited to participate and have come up with many ideas of how we can help as a school. We have started a recycling program and are making compost from lunch and yard waste. In addition to the whole school programs, individual classrooms are choosing environmental topics to focus on. In 5th grade we have chosen alternative energy. With the help from Donors Choose we have been able to purchase several items to supplement our teaching. To help excite students, the 5th grade will be hosting a solar car race among 4th, 5th and 6th graders. In addition, we will be taking part in a Solar Oven cook-off. Even with all of these wonderful resources and projects, we are still lacking a way to share the projects.

Our school has access to student laptops, so as part of our ending project, students will be able to create PowerPoint presentations about the alternative energies they have learned about. I would like to set the students up in groups and have each group focus on one specific type of energy. They would become the experts on that subject matter. Other teachers have agreed to let my 5th graders come in and give presentations to their students about the benefits of using alternative energy and how it can help save our environment. This is where having the projector will be helpful. Students will be able to support their presentations with the multi-media technology that the other students will respond to. My students will feel proud of their projects and gain a lot out of presenting to the other grades and the other students will be learning more about how important it is to help save our valuable resources.

With your help, we can make this project come alive. It will not just be textbooks and talking. It will help focus the 5th grade students and broaden the knowledge base of the students that they present to, but we need your help!
