This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an elementary school that serves students from Kindergarten to 5th grade. We are located in the middle of a diverse and dense urban population in Los Angeles, California. We are part of a bilingual community in a dual language classroom. My students are full of energy and eager to learn about themselves, their community and the world.

We are a Title I school that serves low-income families from different cultural backgrounds and diverse needs.

Some of our families and community members are experiencing homelessness currently or have in the past.

My Project

The homeless community in Los Angeles is expanding. Our school is located in a transient area where families and individuals experiencing homelessness is on the rise. We have a few families of our own who are currently experiencing it. Our students see it, live it and talk about it often during class. We identify them as still being part of our community currently facing difficult times. During the course of the year our students always participate in service projects after they identify problems in their school community, local community or the greater world. As a school we are always trying to explore ways to take action when we identify problems.

We investigate the problem, weigh different perspectives, communicate our ideas and always end our projects by taking action.

This year our students have identified the homeless experience and poverty as a community needs project. They have talked about wanting to help those families at our school currently facing homelessness as well as those in the outer community that they see daily on their way to and from school.

Through this project students will create essentials kits that include: soap, shampoo, conditioner, antibacterial hand wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, wash cloths, protein bars, water and combs. Each student and their families will identify an individual or family who is in great need of these supplies, write a hand written encouraging note and deliver their care package to that individual or family. This may include some of our very own students. It is important that our students learn at an early age the importance of shelter, basic needs and that there are always individuals less fortunate than ourselves, which at times may be our own neighbors. We are fostering our students to become compassionate individuals for a better tomorrow.
