Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Nothing is more exciting then getting to go to the library and combing the stacks for a great book. In our class we have a library that doesn't provide each student with this experience. While we have many books, not all of them are at the reading level of my specific students.

My students are a diverse, energetic group of second graders from a low income, urban area.

Many of our students do not have more than a few books at home, which makes building our classroom library ever more important. They are eager to learn and with the right support and environment, I hope that they make strong growth in their reading levels this year.

My Project

All students deserve the opportunity to read an exciting book. Often when students are reading below grade level, as many of mine are, they are asked to read books that may be developmentally too young for them, which can lead to a lack of interest in reading. If my classroom had more books that were of high quality for students at and below grade level, I think that this would greatly support our literacy engagement goals.

Just as we all have our own story to share, I hope that my students can learn more about themselves and our community through the reading experience.

Supporting our library will not only help this year's group of students but many, many groups of second graders to come.
