Let me guess: your favorite subject in elementary school was PE. Would you believe me if I told you that 80% of K-5 students do not receive the minimum required minutes of physical education? I am one of the teachers committed to keeping PE alive and well. Want to make it someone's favorite subject?
Our school is situated in the middle of some of the most under-served neighborhoods in urban northern California.
Most students qualify for free and reduced lunch, a large percentage of our student population are language learners, and many students come from single-parent households. Although our students see violence and trauma more than most can imagine, they come to school vibrant, full of spirit, and excited to learn. Fortunately our staff is united in providing a quality education to our very deserving students. Unfortunately budgets have been pared down to a minimum, and our fledgling Parent Teacher Organization is not in a position to fundraise nearly as much as those in other parts of the city. We embrace the whole child, and try to provide as many opportunities as possible in core subjects as well as music, art, nutrition, health, and physical education. By donating to this project you will join a dynamic community of people committed to making a difference.
My Project
Over my 10 years of teaching, I have developed an exciting PE program that incorporates fitness, coordination and teamwork. I want my students to be healthy and to develop a love for an active lifestyle. My curriculum rotates through various sports, incorporating skills and non-competitive games. Your donation will provide us the equipment necessary to learn how to bump and set volleyballs, juggle scarves, dribble a basketball around an obstacle course, shoot a soccer goal, and throw bean bags into a target. Remember how fun PE was?! Investing in physical education is investing in the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of future generations. My students love PE--with this equipment they will CRAVE it.
Research shows that physical education is directly correlated to managing behavior problems and increasing academic performance.
Incidences of obesity and type 2 diabetes is exponentially higher in communities of poverty. Perhaps, most importantly though, all children deserve a right to exercise, have fun, and enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
