This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My second graders are amazing. They are active and eager to learn. They are curious about everything, whether it be a new word or a rogue cricket that happens to wander into our classroom. My students are bright, resourceful, and full of imagination. Our school is in a very high poverty area where 98% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Though my students do not have many resources at home, they come to school happy and excited to start the day. My second graders are always looking for new ways to play. When we discussed ways to stay healthy, my students suggested playing outside and moving their bodies as their favorite way to stay healthy.

My Project

"I wish we had stuff to play with on the playground," said one of my students during our discussions about healthy habits. "That would make exercise fun!" my second graders agreed. We talked about what kinds of equipment they would choose. My class receives 2 red handballs and one tetherball for the year. We have no other equipment, unless we borrow a basketball or a volleyball from another class. This makes PE pretty limited. My students decided that they wanted something to ride on. The Scooter Boards would be perfect for their needs. They also asked for a seesaw, but the individual see saws and the Stability Pads would work out just fine. We are very excited know that we might be receiving some new exercise equipment.
