Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Third graders in a New York public school who go home to a house, apartment or shelter with little to no materials to succeed in school. This high-achieving third grade class in an extremely low-income community is made up of students who want to do well and want to learn as much as they can, but barely have the resources to do so.
When a child walks into a classroom and tells the teacher that her mom could not afford to buy a box of crayons or a pack of pencils, it hits hard. Many of my students come to me throughout the year with a similar story - the supplies are just too expensive, so the child has to do without.
For this project, I want every child in my classroom for the 2009-10 school year to start off on the right foot...with many of the basic supplies their parents cannot afford to buy. With every student in my class starting off with a pack of crayons, markers, glue, scissors, pens, pencils, highlighters, post-it notes, and a box to keep it all, no child will go without.
By making a donation to this proposal, you will ensure that each of these third graders has the materials to complete writing projects, art projects and reading assignments throughout the school year. You will make it possible for all students in my class to hit the ground running when they come through my door in September!
