Our school is for students with special needs who, because of severe emotional and behavioral issues, have not been able to learn successfully at their regular schools. They learn a little bit differently and are a little more difficult to engage due to their tremendous emotional needs. We work hard to be able to accommodate their differences, correct their behaviors with gentle guidance and keep them in school and in class!
Our school provides a safe place where students can make mistakes, learn coping skills, and master problem-solving strategies while continuing to be exposed to the district-wide academic curriculum.
Instead of being suspended or removed from the learning environment for extended parts of the day, which is what was happening in their regular schools, our daily goal is to keep students in the learning environment where they can get their academic needs met. The ultimate goal is to give them the coping strategies they need to be able to be successful back at their home schools. In the meantime, we strive to give them the kind of high-quality lessons and activities that will authentically engage them in rigorous learning.
My Project
With all the students working at home right now because of the current shelter-in-place orders due to the Corona virus COVID-19, our school distributed to the families every possible bit of technology we had available. Students could continue to access the online lessons that teachers were providing! We had the majority of our students come to our parking lot technology distribution and the school itself has been left with very little to start the new year with. Although, we know that students will take care of the devices as best they can, it has to be realized that much of this technology is not going to be in our inventory when we begin our new school year. These Fire Tablets and this wonderful DonorsChoose platform is one way that we can begin to restore our stock of devices. When the students return to school, they will have new technology devices waiting for them!
