My students need lighting so they can see to work; posters showing art vocabulary, standards and master works for reference; and sketchbooks and pencils to practice their skills in and out of the classroom.

My Students
After 16 years as an English teacher and Professional Developer, I am starting this November at a new school in a new content area. My new school is a small middle/high school in a large underfunded urban district that serves a high poverty student population. Over the course of the school year, I will teach 140 students in grades six through 12.
Our school is relatively new and has never had a visual arts program, so there are no existing materials to pull from and no classroom setup to start with.
I will be starting a new program at a new school with only a week's notice. I want to give my new students the classroom and materials they need in order to build their art skills as effectively as possible. We need as much help as possible to do the best work possible!
My Project
My new school has never had a visual arts program. That means there will be no paper, no pencils, no paint, brushes, scissors, rulers, erasers or basic supplies to start with. I will be building a new program from the ground up, starting mid-semester in an old science lab. In order for my 140 students to successfully learn the principles of art and design, I need master works and art vocabulary to hang on the walls as references for students to see and use in their learning. They need to see master works to understand different elements of art and principles of design, and need to see terminology with definitions as a reference for writing and classroom discussion. I need lamps to brighten the room for students to better see their creative work. Please help me start out with the right basic art room materials so that I can build a rich learning environment to welcome my new students into art!
