Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Chess is a powerful tool for learning, and the chess boards we’re requesting will directly support students in developing critical thinking, focus, and decision-making skills. Many of our students do not have access to these resources at home, so having them available at school will give all students a chance to learn and grow through the game. Currently, the school only has one chess board that students only have the opportunity to use during lunch. I am determined to start this chess club because one of my students requested it after bringing the one chess board the whole school shares to my attention. Chess encourages patience, concentration, and problem-solving, all of which are key to success in both academics and life.
My students are incredibly bright, resilient, and eager for opportunities to challenge themselves.
Despite facing hardships outside of the classroom, they show up with enthusiasm and determination every day. A chess club will give them a chance to be part of a supportive community, practice leadership and teamwork, and feel pride in mastering a skill. Our goal is to build a lasting program where students of all levels can grow together, compete in local tournaments, and gain confidence that carries into other areas of their lives.
