Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love to participate, learn and experiment. They come from a low-income under-served part of Los Angeles. 93% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school is predominantly Latino, with a smaller population of African American and Filipino students.

My students love to learn by doing.

They make hypotheses and connections, do experiments and report back on the results. They understand the engineering cycle, and they work hard to continuously improve their results.

Most of all, my students are hard workers. They always impress me by how resourceful they are. They know that college and career readiness are their goals, and they are ready to change the odds in the inner city.

My Project

My students participate in an engineering design program to build and design prototype products for consumers. While they are only 8th graders, they learn to code, 3D print or carve and pitch their design to-investors. At city-wide competitions, we recently came in first place with a tool to help the visually impaired walk in public.

We want to step up our engineering game by integrating art.

The HP Sprout Pro is a device that combines the best parts of technology and art so that students can design objects in 3-dimensions and make their work beautiful. It has a 3D scanner to help us intake objects for printing and modification. It also incredibly powerful processor to help run more complex programs. This will be a major step up from the dinky little Chromebooks that my students currently use. With your help, we can give the students access to the latest technology and prepare them to be the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.
