This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We have been given amazing support so far in the form of SPARK P.E. curriculum and equipment. We are looking to branch out even more with our P.E. time to include dance!
Our school is located in a largely immigrant, low-income community.
We are a public K-6 school serving roughly 600 students. Nearly 80% of our students are English learners and 100% qualify for free/reduced rate lunch (low-income indicator). Our amazing students are eager to be the best they can be.
My Project
Through the support of generous donors, we were able to gain access to SPARK's Physical Education Program. Students learn about cooperation, dance, and sports within this program. In order to best use our curriculum, we are asking for a portable CD player that can be used in alignment with our P.E. program. Dance is a large unit of study in the curriculum, but we have been unable to take advantage of it because we do not have access to a portable CD player that can be taken outside with us to open space.
With this resource, we will finally be able to learn a new way to be physically active. Students are largely familiar with sports as a physical activity, but we can give students exposure to a broader definition of physical fitness that can hopefully engage more students in building lifelong health.
Although some argue the common misconception that less time in Physical Education is best, research has clearly shown that there is a correlation between high test scores and high physical fitness scores.
Studies have also shown that an increase in physical activity will positively affect both students' physical health (obesity, cholesterol levels, blood pressure), as well as mental health (self-esteem, anxiety, depression).
Please consider helping our students build their lifelong health.
