My students need forensic and DNA kit materials to complete our forensics murder mystery lab.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Wylie's classroom raised $488
This project is fully funded
My Students
There is nothing like an unsolved murder mystery to get the students' imaginations going. My students are responsible for analyzing crime scene data and solving the mystery. They get to see science in action and are able to understand a real life application of biotechnology.
My students attend a public charter school in a low socio-economic neighborhood.
Even so, the number of Honors Biology classes offered has doubled since last year! There are a lot of inquisitive learners who are truly interested in science and want a challenge. They deserve the highest quality education that I can provide. Recent funding reductions have threatened to cut out some lab activities from my science curriculum. I want my students to get excited about actually doing the science rather than simply reading about it!
My Project
This three-day forensic lab experience culminates in DNA analysis. This is the true application of the learning that we have done about DNA. I am requesting the materials necessary to teach and complete the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and electrophoresis on the DNA from the suspects and the crime scene. I need two sets of prepared DNA samples and well as the reagents used for gel electrophoresis.
Students in this activity are highly motivated to learn and follow lab protocols in order to make the best case for their prosecution team.
My students will learn by becoming a part of the scientific process and they will finally see the value of the concepts that have been taught throughout the semester.
More than half of students from low‑income households
