My students need basic hygiene items since many of them come from low-income homes where money is needed for food and bills. Many of my students are not able to afford these everyday items.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Teaching is something I love to do. This year I made a change from teaching 1st graders to working as a Special Education Teacher for Middle School students. I have the pleasure of working with many different students (many of which were my students from previous years).
Being able to work with many of my old students and reconnect with them is something that I love and enjoy.
Having the basic essential needs to get by in school are always in demand.
My Project
Being a student is hard. It is even harder when one shows up to school and might not smell their best. Unfortunately, many of my students are too familiar with not smelling their best all the time. Many parents are not able to purchase a deodorant, toiletries, or even Feminine Pads for their child. Parents prioritize what is needed in the home. Many parents spend the little money they have on paying the rent and putting food on the table for their children.
I work in a school where the majority of my students come from a low-income household and are not able to afford basic items needed for personal hygiene.
As a teacher, I want to make sure my kids do not have to worry about how they smell. I need my students to be focused on their education and ready to learn. I would love to have these items in stock for when a student might need it. Teenagers are easily embarrassed and not smelling their best can add to this embarrassment. By having these basic items available in the classroom, my students will be able to freshen up and continue with their school day.
