My Students

I have never encountered a group of scholars that are so focused on what they need to do to be successful. As their teacher, I see the daily struggles many of them are forced to go through, which are too common in high-poverty communities. But these scholars amaze me each day with their focus on learning, their engagement in lessons, and their excitement about what they will be learning about next.

One of the greatest indicators of student achievement, regardless of family income or background, is parent and family involvement.

Many of my students come from single parent or two working parent households, making it difficult for them to volunteer in the classroom or on field trips, despite their desire to do so. Support of this project will enable these parents to become involved in their child's education in ways they can from anywhere and at any time; through an online classroom blog.

My Project

This project is geared toward providing parents and families with an opportunity to become involved in the classroom and provide feedback to the students. Although many of my students' parents do not have a personal computer or home wi-fi, all of them have smart phones with internet access.

A classroom blog where students can update, post, and share their learning is a powerful tool that encourages interactions between home and school as well as provides a window into the classroom.

Students will work collaboratively and create their own blog update to share on the classroom blog. By having an iPad mini in the classroom, students will be able to take pictures and videos from anywhere at school, even on field trips, and compose the blog post using Kidblog.org Parents and families are given a secure login code to connect with our classroom blog. Family members are able to comment and "like" a post. I hope to encourage the blogging and eventually create student blogs/portfolios to encourage writing and reflection on current events.
