My Students
Help young English language learners realize their awesome potential.
Our California school has been named a "persistently lowest achieving school." Due to limited funding, these students do not have equal access to many of the resources of their grade equivalent peers in other areas.
Many of these students do not have reading materials outside of school. They have a passion for learning that would be benefited by exposure to research-approved resources.
My Project
I am requesting two classroom laptop computers so students can take comprehension quizzes on books they have read, as well as practice grade-level math skills, and benefit from differentiated instruction for students who are far below grade level and those who need to be challenged. I am requesting a subscription to Time for Kids so that students will have access to current non-fiction topics, since our school day requires that we use a specific publisher to teach language arts and math.
Students will be inspired in small reading groups with a subscription to Time. We will choose different reading strategies every two weeks, and my enrichment group will use new laptops to engage in student-centered research projects. The whole class would use the laptops to take comprehension quizzes, which boost student confidence, and cultivate critical thinking skills.
Students have shown tremendous growth in reading comprehension by taking these online reading quizzes.
Having access to two laptop computers and a subscription to an interesting non-fiction source would accelerate our goal of becoming readers at second grade level and beyond!
