This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I greet my students at the door they are full of energy and excitement. That physical energy keeps them engaged. When these students are asked to sit in stagnant desks that can feel cramped, they often become fidgety and lose focus while doing the components of the class.

I'm hoping to change the atmosphere of my Reading Intervention class from a traditional formal setting to one that can provide comfort and accommodations for students in need.

Many of my students have a medical or learning diagnosis that prevent sitting for more than a few minutes without movement difficult. My class has the freedom to allow students to find a comfortable position in which to do their work-which is primarily software oriented using tablets. These chairs would allow the students the comfort and flexibility to engage fully. They can sit or lay on them for independent reading. They can be used instead of a hard chair while at a computer station. My school is very diverse in its population and needs. We are located in a fast-paced, high-tech area where some can be left behind without the caring support of our schools. The students I serve have many challenges to overcome, but a comfortable learning environment shouldn't be one of them.

My Project

These chairs will be sought after by my students. They can be used at their desks during direct instruction or independent time. They can be moved around to use as a cushion to sit on or against during independent reading time. And, they will let students position themselves more comfortable at the software station.

I have asked my students what would make a difference to to them and they always ask for things that make it feel more like home.

I've actually had students request cushions for sitting and there is often a race for the "teacher" chair that allows them to rock and twirl. My students need to feel comfortable to open their minds to learning. I need enough to share with them all.
