Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I meet my enthusiastic students at the door full of energy. They then sit in their standard, plastic chairs and try to concentrate as hard as they can. This is a daunting task for most of my students who have learning and physical need constant movement to keep focused.

I am lucky enough to teach at a diverse school full of students with great potential.

My students live in the middle of an educated, high-tech world, yet they are often left behind. Through your help I can enrich their learning experience. My Reading Literacy class has students with medical and learning needs that make them unable to sit for extended periods of time. The students spend a portion of the time reading independently, a portion on tablet software, and the remainder of the time is small and whole group instruction.

My Project

These sit balls allow students to have freedom of movement unlike a chair. Students seeking movement will get up every few minutes or dangerously rocked back a traditional chair when the need for movement arises. With sit balls, they can take there chair station to station which prevents the he sat in my chair dilemma. During independent reading they can find a nice spot away from distraction and sit on or prop up against the ball. The software station uses iPad technology, so students can sit in a more comfortable position to achieve their best work. The sensory experience is helpful to many of my students with ADHD and other sensory seeking behaviors. They are more likely to sit in a relaxed way to allow learning to happen.

The students will have a less restrictive personal space which allows them to be calm and comfortable.

With increased focus, there is less disruptions from frequent stretch breaks. When my students are consistently on task for 15 minutes straight they show the most growth. I know that these will make a difference.
