This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are amazing. They are active and eager to learn. They are curious about everything, whether it be a new word or a rogue cricket that happens to wander into our classrooms. Our students are bright, resourceful, and full of imagination.
We have the most amazing students around!
Our school is in a very high-poverty area where 98% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Though our students do not have many resources at home, they come to school happy and excited to start the day. They are truly inspirational.
My Project
Our school hopes to start a science lab that our pre-k through 5th grade students (including 5 special education classes) can access during after school hours. Our students have limited resources at home. A science lab that they can visit with their parents and siblings will help our students become interested in science. Teachers will be able to give their students observational assignments which they can complete with their families after school. Our school would provide science journals for each of our students that can be used to take observational notes. The journals would be the way that teachers can assess student learning. Students who are unable to visit the lab after school would be allowed to visit during their recess time.
This school-wide science lab will expose our students to science activities that they would not normally have access to.
In order to meet the NGSS standards across multiple grade levels, we are asking for high-interest materials. The supplies that we are requesting include several different types of animal skulls. Studying bone and teeth structures will encourage our students and their families to be compassionate towards all living things.
