This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help us learn the value of a number. My students have difficulty understanding the different place values of numbers.

My students are in the 3rd grade in an inner city school in New York City.

Many of the children come from shelters or single parent homes. Even though they come from a rough home life, the children come to school ready and eager to learn. Since the lack of money is a major problem at home, their parents don't have the resources to buy extra material to help them understand what is being taught in school.

My Project

The place value boards will help my students comprehend the value of a digit in a number. They will be able to physically flip the numbers back and forth to show their understanding. The boards will also be able to be used as a reinforcement at home. The students can work with their parents to strengthen comprehension of the value of a number. The place value chart will be hung in the math center so it will be constantly visible for the whole class to see.

Since I have no hands-on material in my classroom to help teach place value, this donation will make such a difference to their learning.

The children will be able to see and understand the value of a number as it is being taught. They will also be able to work cooperatively with each other, flipping the numbers on the boards to create larger numbers. Learning the value of a number is a very essential part of math and with your help, it will be easier for my students.
