Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
From day one, my seventh graders have been asking me if we are going to "digest something" in life science this year. Please help us DISSECT so that we can fully apply everything we learn in our anatomy and physiology unit.
My students live in a community where only 4.2% of the population holds a college degree.
They attend a charter school with excellent teachers, but have to overcome obstacles that eleven and twelve-year old children do not deserve - just to come to school every day. School is a safe haven for them where they share with me that science is their favorite class "because of all of the cool stuff we get to learn!" My students are curious individuals who care about their learning. They want to get the most out of their education to make themselves, their families and their community proud. As a student of our charter organization, our students are committed to uplifting their community.
My Project
My students absolutely deserve the same educational opportunities that their higher-income peers at the preparatory school TWELVE miles away experience. Providing them with the chance to dissect ANY organism this year in 7th grade life science will open doors for their science education. We want preserved rats to dissect for their culminating anatomy and physiology project. This opportunity will show my students that there is more to science than reading from the textbook - it will allow them to apply their knowledge HANDS-ON.
I believe this opportunity is one that my students completely deserve - especially because the preparatory school down the street does this same dissection.
Furthermore, I believe this opportunity will inspire them to pursue higher education in science and ultimately, a career in the health science field - two life opportunities that less than 4.2% of the community experience. Thank you for your support!
