My Students
My students are extremely excited about our new STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) lab that opened in December. They are always asking when they can come in next, and what cool projects we are going to be working on.
We are a small suburban school that teaches grades 4 through 6.
Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and economic classes. We have recently launched a new STEM lab in our building to increase students in the topics of science, technology, engineering, and math. With so much testing these days on language arts and math, we do not want other subjects to fall by the wayside. We want to encourage our students to learn by doing in a hands on environment that works to integrate a variety of subjects.
My Project
Our students are very aware of the larger world around them, but many miss the smaller things that make up our world. While our curriculum includes a focus on cells and small organisms, the students have been limited to pictures in the text and workbooks. With the addition of digital microscopes to our STEM lab, students will be able to see actual cells and small organisms, either on their own computer screens or shared on the projector screen. They will be able to make their own slides and discover the hidden world around them.
For many students, simply seeing a picture does not have much impact on their learning.
These microscopes will help our students be more engaged and involved in their learning, and will spark more curiosity in the sciences!
