My Students

I teach in South Boston and my students are clever, creative, and resilient. They are curious about that which interests them and are hungry for something exciting in their school.

When my students are confronted with a task, idea, or concept that is joyful, they come alive.

They deserve so much more than what our school can offer and I hope to transform my classroom space into one that better sparks joy in them. This project will integrate their biology, math, and English knowledge in one cohesive unit. Students will learn how natural selection drives evolution by closely examining the rise and spread of antibiotic resistance among bacteria. This lab will drive the project and allow students to see evolution occur before their eyes.

My Project

Evolution is often one of the most difficult concepts to teach. It is abstract and much of the evidence that supports the theory relies on strong deductive reasoning. This lab allows students to see how bacterial populations change over time to become resistant to different antibiotics.

This lab is similar to what students might carry out in college and will provide a wonderful opportunity to extend their learning and skills past their typical high school day.

Not only will this lab help my students better understand evolution, but it will also be part of their multi-content learning project to examine a major public health crisis. The rise and spread of resistant bacteria is a challenge that public health officials are working to fight more and more. This lab illustrates how and why this healthy crisis has arisen and, more importantly, how we can prevent future medical catastrophes.
