My biotechnology classes are filled with bright juniors and seniors at a wonderful arts focused high school in Northern California. They are highly motivated and head towards college. They are also funny, bright, and wonderful to be around.
Biotechnology is the wave of the future in science and my students need access to modern technology to learn the real-world lab skills that will help them in college and the workplace.
These students are actively involved in the science program and biotech is for most of them their last high school science course.
My Project
The MiniOne system is real-time electrophoresis unit built in a safe, classroom friendly, compact package that replaces the electrophoresis running tank, power supply and UV transilluminator. These units can be used on any lab bench which makes them highly useful when space is at a premium. These also run gels that have eco-friendly stain which is much safer for classroom use.
We need three MiniOne gel electrophoresis systems and Gel Green stain to use with them.
Students will be able to use these units to separate DNA fragments in many applications, like forensic testing and gene sequencing. By supporting this project, my students will have access to some of the best new technology available to them to run gel electrophoresis and learn about DNA. There are so many projects that will be easier to run and students will get the skills they need to work in a 21st century lab environment.
