My Students
Are you Ready Player One? 7th grade students prepare to achieve their highest goals and levels when they come into my Literacy and Social Studies classroom where we focus on engaging activities and building a community where everyone is welcome and challenged to go above and beyond.
We learn together at a small neighborhood school in Philadelphia.
My students are special to me because this is the neighborhood I grew up in. We are a classroom that includes all ranges or learners and abilities. It's truly a community because of its small size and really allows for us to be a family. My kids are inquisitive. They love learning and being involved in all sorts of activities. They are creative and funny. I love to challenge them to take ownership of their learning and they are always ready to respond and make it happen. We try to rise to the occasion and discover new ways to learn and we try new things to help make that happen. We are a group that really tries to be best people we possibly can. I wouldn't trade these kids for the world because they are all really unique. I'm also really lucky because I teach in the neighborhood I grew up in and we are really bonded by our sense of community and neighborhood.
My Project
Scope magazines are awesome! The students will use them within both the Literacy and Social Studies curriculum and they serve a wide variety of needs. They can be used as a whole group shared reading lesson, guided reading session, and provide writing instructions. Attached to them come a variety of resources such as scaffold activities for reading paired texts, a drama to perform, and essay writing guides which were super helpful for those students with learning differences that required accommodations. They are engaging and provide real articles that the kids are interested in. The articles are relevant especially for those students in middle school. We can also use the magazines in Literacy centers or they can serve for homework assignments if every student has access to their own subscription. They also help the students learn how to write more eloquently and have fun contests that they can enter to win things like books or author vista!
We had a subscription last year but not enough magazines for the whole class so I was splitting 25 magazines between almost 70 kids!
These magazines do make a difference in their Literacy skills which is why I would like for each student to their own so badly and why I know it will make a difference. They will have access to engaging real world material not to mention awesome resources to improve their reading and writing skills. This will help my kids achieve the reading skills they need!
