Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students come from one of the most economically distressed parts of our city. Every day, they overcome challenges in their community, families and their individual lives. These challenges include single parent (or even "zero" parent) homes, violence, poverty and discrimination.
Despite the fact they face many obstacles, they are determined to get the education that will lift them out of poverty and set them on the path to new horizons.
They need to have a rich background of literacy and critical thinking to successfully complete their journey.
My Project
The book "Hidden Figures" tells the story of how a group of African-American women, called "computers" in those days, worked the math and science that enabled us to win the space race and put a man on the Moon.
I want my students to read about the women of NASA, to be inspired by their story, and to realize that they too can reach for the stars.
My dream is that they will follow their dreams. I hope they will realize the importance in persevering in spite of the obstacles they may find in their paths. I particularly hope my female students will realize that science, technology, engineering and math, STEM courses, are for them too.
