My Students

"I believe children are the future. Teach them well and let them lead the way." These are not only words from a popular song, but a strong belief that I hold as a teacher.

Equity for all!

My students are full of potential. They are bright shining beacons of light. I am asking for assistance so that they can glow like the stars that they are.

Fortunately, for the students in my class, envisioning the future is something we think of and talk about often. Because their daily existence is so challenging, I have them focus on their bright and delightful futures!

I teach in a low socio-economic area at a Title One school where ninety-nine percent of the population receives free breakfast and lunch at school. On most days, the heartiest and healthiest meals that the students receive are what they eat at school. It isn't unusual for the students in my class to stockpile food in their book bags to take home in order to have something to eat later that day.

Despite the harsh circumstances and backdrops of their lives, the students come to school daily with smiles on their faces.

My Project

Research shows that students lose about 3 months’ worth of learning over the summer because they are not practicing the skills that they acquired during the year. What Is Summer Learning Loss? Often referred to as summer setback or the summer slide, summer learning loss is when students return to school, at a lower academic level, than the end of the last school year. This happens when a child does not use or practice the skills, he or she learned at school during summer vacation. This year has been especially difficult as my students were learning remotely for most of the school year. In the Bronx, New York where I teach all of my students are living well below the poverty. Many of these children lost a family member to Covid-19. Others have parents who lost their job because of it. These children will spend their summer months in front of a television set or staying with family in their native country.

Please help me stop the Summer Brain Drain; these youngsters have suffered enough this year!

These practice workbooks, will help my talented students, keep their skills sharp over the summer months. These workbooks are portable and can go where the students go.
