Technology has become such an integral part of learning. It allows me to bring all kinds of concepts to life for my students. Unfortunately, a very vital part of my classroom's technology, the laptop computer, is on its last legs.
The students in my gifted/high ability magnet classroom come from very diverse backgrounds, both ethnically and socio-economically.
School is a great equalizer. I love watching my students find common ground and work together in spite of their differences.
My Project
My students need a new laptop computer. The laptop computer, combined with the LCD projector, is such a powerful teaching tool. I can take my class on virtual field trips to experience what we are learning about: the desert, the mountains, the coast, or the valleys as we learn about California's geographic regions. When students don't know what a stage coach is when it is mentioned in our textbook, I can pull up a picture and help them understand. The phases of the moon become much more comprehensible when I can pull up a Newtonsapple.tv video clip. When students do long term projects, they can create videos or power point presentations to share what they learned with their classmates. These are just a few examples of how technology has truly enhanced my students' learning over the past several years.
Unfortunately, the laptop the district purchased for my classroom is almost seven years old.
It crashes on a regular basis, and often isn't able to run the software or applications required by the technology components of our current textbooks. My students truly look forward to the learning experiences afforded by technology. Please help us to continue this by helping to get a new HP laptop for our classroom.
