This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teacher 23 eager first graders in an inner city school. Most of the students in my school are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Many of them are English Language Learners and vocabulary is a large part of my reading curriculum.

My students are taught at home and at school not to waste anything that can be reused or recycled. We reuse and recycle everything that we can. Tissue boxes are used as crayon holders and old newspapers are used for cutting out pictures. My children know the value of their classroom resources. They also know the significance of reducing and reusing for the environment, because global warming is an issue that they are well aware of. It is a shame when hand-made flash cards are discarded due to rips and tears.

We need a laminating machine to be able to reuse many of the paper items in the classroom. This includes such things as flashcards for reading and math, name tags, alphabet strips and number grids for individual tables. Small charts can also be laminated and reused from year to year.

Your generosity will allow my students to have their items laminated (name tags, flash cards, number grids and other items that tear easily). As students think about global warming, they are concerned about keeping as many trees alive as they can. This laminating machine will allow me to send sturdy paper items home with students that normally would come back worn and torn. These items can be reused next year. With the severe cuts to the education budget, this machine will not be possible without your support!
