Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a kindergarten teacher in a very low income neighborhood. While the school does provide the teachers with necessities, such as paper, pencils, and crayons, we are really lacking in our supply of books.
Kindergarten is the time when we need to help children build a solid foundation in literacy. Throughout the year we teach and reinforce the various concepts of print. Children learn that print moves from left to right, that there is space between words, that we use punctuation, etc. Most importantly, children learn that letter sounds come together to make words that convey meaning.
Scholastic make a fantastic set of sight word readers. There are five copies of each story, allowing a teacher to work with a small group of children. The children read along with the teacher or to each other. They gain confidence in reading as the repetitive text becomes familiar. They can then move on to independent reading. The set also includes blackline masters of each book for photocopying. The children can receive their very own copy of each book to take home and read to their parents!
To help reinforce each sight word, I am asking for a class set of sight word journals. The journals target 25 sight words and provide a place for children to practice writing. Each page has four simple sentences, with pictures above each noun to help children identify words.
I want to thank you so much for reading this proposal. My children need to build a solid foundation in literacy and I do my best to provide them with the optimal, tried and true, materials.
