Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a fifth year ESL Kindergarten teacher who is need of some new games.
The school is 82% economically disadvantaged.
My kindergarteners are in the beginning steps of reading. To help them be successful readers, they need to first learn sight words. These words, such as and, it, the, that and I, will be seen frequently in text.
My Project
This is why I need games to promote this learning. The games will go in a work station that the students can work on independently or with a group. These materials will help my students get the right start to reading. The sight word floor mats will be used when they walk in.
"According to Robert Hillerich, just three words I, and, the account for ten percent of all words in printed English." Learning to recognize sight words by sight is critical to developing fluency in reading.
Recognizing these words gives students a basic context for figuring out other words. Once they recognize the, they can predict with amazing accuracy what the next word will be. These materials will help my students get the right start to reading.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
